LIES,
TERROR, AND THE RISE OF THE NEO-COMMUNIST EMPIRE: ORIGINS AND DIRECTION,
REVIEWS:
"Toby Westerman, Editor and Publisher of International News Analysis Today, www.inatoday.com, has written
a book in which I made contribution some years ago. It is a wonderful account of the trials of free men against the tyranny of communism an absolutely appropriately
titled! Its historical backdrop brings one up to date with a perspective on the rise of the Neo-Communist Empire. This new "empire' threatens not just Taiwan
but all free people. I have read it and I recommend the book." Lloyd Evans,823
BADGE OF HONOR ASSOCIATION USA [This organization is seeking U.S.
veterans who served on Taiwan from 1949 to 1979, and began with those who participated
in the 1958 armed confrontation with communist China].
"This is not light reading, but it is most certainly an important book. Toby Westerman, the
author of Lies, Terror, and the Rise of the Neo-Communist Empire: Origins and Direction is an analyst of international news and, as such, provides the reader
with a comprehensive understanding of the long struggle between communism where it is practiced in the world and capitalism which creates wealth and rewards risk.
Enter the Islamic revolution into this struggle and you have a world in turmoil. This book will help clarify many of the major trends occurring worldwide and is
well worth reading," Alan Caruba, Bookviews.
"As a career Latin Americanist, I fully appreciate that one-third of Westerman's provocative book is devoted to Latin American issues. Especially well
researched and argued are the sections on Cuba and Venezuela. The central role of these nations' intelligence services define these regimes, a perspective soundly
captured by Westerman. This fast-paced and highly readable book is a worthy read for all those interested in Latin America."
Christopher
Simmons, a retired Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) counterintelligence officer,
currently serves as an Army reserve intellignece officer. Simmons was a central
figure in the interrogation of Ana Belen Montes, one of Cuba's master spies. Simmons
is publisher of Cuban
Intelligence Research Center.

"Westerman's new book explains in detail the unexpected rise and spread of the Neo-Communist movement,
including its weapons, espionage and bitter hatred of the United States and its Western allies. If you are interested in how we got to the point we are at today
around the world, this is the book you must read."

From the introduction:
America's enemies are still at war with the United States, and the greatest weapon they have is the self-hatred preached by the anti-American American who presently dominates in the media, academia, and certain centers of American politics. As a result, we are unprepared to face the alliance of Islamic fundamentalist fanatics and a resurgent neo-communist ideology. Fundamentalist Islam finds capitalism repugnant, and the neo-communist ideologues brand the free market as the root of all evil. Both Muslim fundamentalists and neo-communists around the world hate the United States. The alliance of the religious zealot who wants a caliphate in the name of Allah and neo-communist Party unbeliever who wants state dominance over every human activity is a union of convenience, but nonetheless deadly.
The Anti-American American shares the hatred of America propagated by Muslim fanatics and the neo-communists. For the Anti-American American, the United States is the cause of, not the solution to, the ills of the world. The Anti-American American ignores or is sympathetic with the vicious alliance of fundamentalist Islamic militants and a resurgent neo-communist ideology united to destroy the United States and the concept of human freedom. Neo-communism demands the state be sovereign over every human being, while militant Islam acts in the name of a deity which requires the blood of the innocent be shed.
Despite the most cherished hopes of the leftist establishment, fundamentalist Islam remains an implacable foe of the U.S., and no set agenda of negotiations can change the virulent hatred manifested by Islamic fanatics toward the United States. The centralized media continually dismisses the dangers posed by Islamic militancy and its determination to destroy the U.S….
ON THE END OF THE COLD WAR:
Chapter One, The Promise
On June 17, 1992 the world gave every indication of changing forever. On that date the first president of the Russian Federation, Boris Nikolayevich Yeltsin, stood before a joint session of the Congress of the United States boldly declaring that communism was dead and would never again threaten humanity….
The decades-long nightmare was over now. President Yeltsin reassured the world that this was the case….
As Yeltsin spoke, the apocalyptic terminology of the Cold War began to fade from the recollection of the listeners: communist spies, infiltration, double agents - even triple agents, first-strike capability, retaliatory capacity, bomb shelter, and megaton bombs. The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics USSR), had died quietly not quite six months before Yeltsin's address to the U.S. Congress and the world. Yeltsin and his reformers had defied the old communist order and had simply pushed aside Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev and his disintegrating Soviet Union.
Amid thunderous applause from U.S. lawmakers and observers in the gallery, Yeltsin spoke of a new era of peace, the end of the Cold War, and the new hope for all humanity.
"The world can sigh in relief. The idol of communism, which spread everywhere social strife, animosity, and unparalleled brutality, which instilled fear in humanity, has collapsed. It has collapsed, never to rise again."
Over the ruins of the old communist empire a new, democratic Russia arose: "I am here to assure you, we shall not let it rise again in our land… Russia has made its final choice in favor of a civilized way of life…. Liberty will not be fooled. There can be no coexistence between democracy and a totalitarian state system….
But even as the echoes of Congressional applause and cheers began to fade…unsettling but largely ignored signs showed that the reality would differ markedly from the bright promise Yeltsin offered. A disturbing continuity from the Soviet era to the rise of the new Russia became evident, if often unacknowledged.
At the same time Yeltsin won the confidence and respect of U.S. political and corporate leaders… Dmitry Olshevsky and his wife, Yelena Olshevskaya, two operatives for Russia's new foreign espionage service, SVR, quietly prepared for the work of deep cover espionage half a world away. The KGB had been formally abolished at the end of 1991, and its duties were split between a domestic spy service, the FSB (Federal Security Service) and the SVR (Foreign Intelligence Service). Despite the administrative change, Dmitry and Yelena continued an espionage tradition which began with the Bolsheviks in 1917….
