Atrocities reminiscent of Nazi Germany are being perpetrated against the Iraqi people as well as against coalition forces, and are attributed in large part to Saddam Hussein's elite force, the Fedayin. Like Hitler's SS (SchutzStaffel), the Fedayin performs political police functions, and, like the SS, the Fedayin fulfills its duties with effective savagery.
The Fedayin are known for "a cruelty and ferocity which terrorizes the population - the purpose for which it was founded," according to a report from the Italian news daily, La Stampa.
Under direct command of Saddam's eldest son, Uday - a man known for his brutality rivaling or surpassing that of his father -- the Fedayin ("martyrs") is one of the main supports for Saddam Hussein's regime.
Fedayin units can intervene "wherever and whenever" they chose, using "whatever means" they find useful, reported La Stampa.
The unquestioned leader of the Fedayin, Uday Hussein, models lawless behavior to Fedayin units, pushing the limits of criminal behavior from rape and torture to murder -- Uday's sadism is legendary. Despite his many crimes, Uday has never been prosecuted.
Cruising the streets in black pick-up trucks, wearing black headdresses and brandishing automatic weapons, the Fedayin display an "arrogance" to all regulations except their own "untouchable omnipotence," stated La Stampa.
The Fedayin are linked with the most recent atrocities in Iraq, from executing captured allied troops to forcing civilians into the Iraqi military, and threatening to execute members of the families of new "recruits." The Fedayin have attacked anti-Saddam rebels in Basra, and sought to disrupt allied supply columns.
Founded in 1995, the Fedayin answer to no authority except Uday. The Fedayin is independent of the regular military chain of command, and of the Baath political party, which dominates Iraq's political life.
Estimates of Fedayin strength range from 40 to 100 thousand, with new recruits trained in Republican Guards units. Upon completion of basic training the new recruit joins a Fedayin unit.
Armed with weapons ranging from automatic weapons to armored vehicles, Fedayin units are stationed in every Iraqi city, especially in Baghdad. Their mission is to suppress popular uprisings and insure that regular army units stay loyal to the regime. Fedayin members are recruited from the Al-Bu Nasir tribe exclusively from the Tikrit and Al-Shaqat regions, both "hotbeds" of pro-Saddam support, La Stampa reported.
Many of the Fedayin's fresh recruits come from a military youth organization called the "Young Lions," which comprises boys aged 12 to 17. The Young Lions come from the same districts as the Fedayin.
