Terrorists are now using the Internet not only for recruiting and encouraging the rank-and-file, but also for instruction in basic terror tactics. Any would-be-terrorist can obtain homicidal information in the comfort and privacy of his/her own home, according to a top Al Qaeda leader.
The prospect of self-taught terrorism suggests that personal initiative and decentralization may soon provide additional elements of chaos to the already difficult to detect web of terror groups and individuals.
"It is not necessary …for you to join in a military training camp, or travel to another country…you can learn alone, or with other brothers, in [our arms] preparation program," announced Al Qaeda leader Abu Hadschir Al Muqrin, and cited by Der Spiegel Online, the Internet version of the weekly German newsmagazine.
The Al Qaeda Internet site is in a magazine format, and promises to supply information on weaponry and military operations in each edition.
The terror site has also provided information on upcoming attacks.
Nearly two weeks before the bombing of the Saudi security headquarters, the Al Qaeda web site carried information concerning the assault.
"Several operations against the leaders of the security service in Saudi Arabia could occur…the brothers of the Haramain Brigade are involved," declared Al Muqrin, shortly before the actual attack.
After the deadly blast, Al Muqrin proclaimed that, "By the will of God, the Haramain Brigade was successful."
The Haramain Brigade's "success" included four deaths and the destruction of Saudi security headquarters.
The Haramain Brigade is a recent addition to the network of terror groups, emerging in the early Fall of 2003 with a threat against the Saudi government and those designated as "crusaders."
The Saudi government has earned the wrath of Islamic militants because of its perceived cooperation with Western nations. The "crusaders" are those Westerners who actively oppose militant Islam.
The fury directed against the Saudi government, and particularly the royal family, is ironic, because the House of Saud was the first to support Wahhabism, which claims to be the "pure" - and militant -- form of Islam. Saudi support for Wahhabism goes back to the mid-1700s, and serves as a point of reference for all current theories of Islamic fundamentalism.
The hatred directed against the Saudi government and ruling family is a stark warning to the United States and the West in general.
Islamic militancy rages at the Saudi government, even though the Saudis do not allow a Christian church bell to ring or public church service. The degree of Muslim fundamentalist contempt and anger must be even greater for the still non-Islamic America and the West.
